Google Expands Gemini AI Across Docs, Sheets, Slides, and Drive to Speed Up Workflows

Google announced a new set of AI updates on Tuesday, embedding its Gemini assistant into Docs, Sheets, Slides, and Drive. 

The rollout aims to transform these apps from passive tools into “active collaborators” that can draft documents, build complex spreadsheets, and design presentations by pulling data directly from a user’s emails, chats, and files.

From blank page to final draft in docs

The most significant update to Google Docs is the “Help me create” tool. Instead of starting from scratch, users can now provide a simple prompt to generate a full draft. Gemini doesn’t just guess; it “can now pull relevant information from your files, emails, and the web to securely connect dots,” according to Google.

For example, a user could ask Gemini to draft a neighborhood newsletter by referencing specific HOA meeting minutes and a list of upcoming events found in their Drive. To ensure the final product doesn’t read like a patchwork of different authors’ styles, a new “Match writing style” feature can unify the tone throughout the document.

Sheets that ‘build themselves’

Google Sheets is receiving a massive intelligence boost designed to handle the heavy lifting of data organization. A new feature allows users to describe a project like “organize my upcoming move,” and Gemini will build the entire tracker, including contact lists for utilities and comparison tables for moving quotes found in the user’s inbox.

Additionally, a new “Fill with Gemini” tool can automatically populate table cells.

“For more complex tasks, you can now populate tables even faster by using ‘Fill with Gemini’ to instantly generate custom text, categorize data and summarize data or access real-time information from Google Search,” Google stated in their announcement.

Slides and Drive: Design and discovery

In Slides, Gemini now serves as a design partner, generating fully editable slides, diagrams, and layouts that match a presentation’s existing theme. Google also teased an upcoming update that will allow the AI to generate an entire five-slide deck from a single prompt.

Meanwhile, Google Drive is evolving beyond a storage locker. When users search in Drive using natural language, Gemini will now generate an “AI Overview” at the top of the results. Instead of opening multiple documents to find what you need, the overview summarizes the most relevant information from your files, complete with citations.

A new “Ask Gemini in Drive” feature takes this further. Users can select specific files or folders and ask complex questions that span documents, emails, and calendar events. For example, Google suggested selecting all your tax-related files and asking, “What should I ask my tax advisor before I file this year’s tax returns?” Gemini will then provide a detailed response based on your actual financial documents.

Availability

The new Gemini capabilities are rolling out in beta beginning this week.

They are initially available to Google AI Ultra and Pro subscribers, with English support at launch. Docs, Sheets, and Slides features are being released globally, while the new Drive capabilities will first appear in the United States. Google said the tools are still evolving and that more languages and improvements will arrive over time.
