Virginia Bill Would Ban Free Speech for Peaceful Pro-Lifers
The Virginia Senate and House of Delegates disagreed on SB 137, a bill that clearly impedes on the free speech rights of people who peacefully pray outside of an abortion facility. A final version will be voted on in the next day or two before the close of the General Assembly session.
Please contact your Senator and Delegate. Tell them to oppose this bill in any form that comes out because it infringes on free speech and freedom of assembly.
SB 137 assumes ill intent by all pro-life individuals who gather to pray on a public area that is within 40 feet of a building that houses an abortion facility. This bill is clearly intended to follow in the tracks of the federal FACE act and impose a particular burden on peaceful prayer or pro-life sidewalk counselors.
This bill also imposes a stiff criminal penalty on anyone who violates the law. This will create a chilling effect on peaceful efforts to offer women entering an abortion clinic — who may be experiencing a crisis pregnancy — any information about help they would receive to give birth to their babies.
Contact your Senator and Delegate today: vote No on SB 137.
