“To bring this landmark play back to Broadway with Ayo, Don, Tommy, and Mike at the helm is an extraordinary privilege, and we couldn’t be more proud to be part of this production. Proof is exactly the kind of story Higher Ground was built to champion,” the Obamas shared in a statement. “A play that asks profound questions about brilliance, doubt, and what we inherit from the people we love most.”
“We’re thrilled to welcome Higher Ground as partners on Proof and to have their creative vision and passion behind this production,” fellow producers Mike Bosner and Thomas Kail said. “Their impeccable taste in storytelling and community-building makes them ideal collaborators for this revival.”
Here’s a synopsis: Catherine (Edebiri), the brilliant but restless daughter of renowned mathematics professor Robert (Cheadle), is thrust into turmoil when a notebook containing a revelatory proof is discovered after his death. As debate erupts over its true authorship, Catherine must confront the power of legacy, and the cost of proving herself.
Jin Ha and Samira Wiley will also star, with the 16-week limited engagement beginning previews on Tuesday, March 31st at the Booth Theatre in NYC. The play will officially open Thursday, April 16th.
Through Higher Ground, the Obamas have already produced several projects, from film and television to podcasting. This is their first foray into theatre.
From those projects, the company’s projects have earned an Oscar win, six Emmy wins and two Grammy wins – all that’s left is a Tony for the EGOT!
