Liverpool residents urged to make No Smoking Day the start of something life‑changing
This No Smoking Day (Wednesday 11 March), Liverpool City Council is encouraging smokers across the city to imagine what life could look like without cigarettes – more time, more memories, and more moments that really matter.
The message is simple: quitting smoking isn’t about giving something up – it’s about getting your future back.
Across Liverpool, thousands of people tried to quit last year, and many succeeded. They quit so they could watch their children grow up, enjoy long walks with family, be there for important milestones, or simply breathe easier every day. This year, Liverpool is asking: What will you gain by stopping? What will you miss if you don’t?
Professor Matt Ashton, Director of Public Health for Liverpool City Council, said:
“Smoking remains one of the leading causes of preventable illness locally, but the benefits of quitting begin almost immediately. Your breathing improves, your heart begins to repair, and your risk of serious disease starts to fall. With the right support, you’re far more likely to quit successfully – and we want every smoker in Liverpool to know they deserve that healthier future.”
This year’s message echoes the powerful What Will You Miss? theme – reminding smokers that continuing to smoke could mean missing out on the moments they most look forward to, from birthdays and weddings to everyday joys. No one ever regrets becoming smokefree.
