Sandro Tonali to Man United: Strengths, weaknesses and honest transfer verdict
Manchester United may have to dive into the transfer market once again to finally resolve their long-standing midfield issues.
In our previous analysis, we examined the strengths, weaknesses and final transfer verdict on Brighton midfielder Carlos Baleba.
The focus now shifts to another highly intriguing name that has been linked with a move to Old Trafford. We are talking about Sandro Tonali.
He moved to Newcastle United in the summer of 2023 and seems ready to take the next major step in his career.
Strengths
The 25-year-old is a technically gifted midfielder who remains calm and composed even when receiving the ball under intense pressure.
Tonali is also capable of winning tackles, pressing aggressively and covering huge distances thanks to his impressive stamina.
He will offer a physical presence similar to Casemiro while also possessing the mobility to cover every blade of grass on the pitch.
The Italian is capable of delivering incisive passes from deep positions, which is a known weakness in Carlos Baleba’s game.
Tonali operates best in a hybrid number six/number eight role and has the technique to switch play with accurate diagonal passes.
Weaknesses
Despite his impressive all-round game, Tonali has rarely been known for his goal-scoring ability.
In fact, the midfielder has scored only five Premier League goals during his time at Newcastle United. For comparison, Casemiro has already registered six goals in just 27 league appearances this season.
While United are searching for a reliable holding midfielder, they would ideally prefer someone who can also contribute regularly with goals and assists.
Another potential concern surrounding Tonali is the baggage of his previous off-field controversy.
With all due respect to Newcastle, Man United operate under a far bigger global spotlight. At Old Trafford, even the smallest developments quickly turn into global headlines.
As a result, any future betting-related controversy could damage the reputation of the club as an institution.
Final transfer verdict
On paper, Tonali looks to be a solid replacement for Casemiro.
His tenacity, work rate and willingness to fight for the team could certainly strengthen United in the centre of the pitch.
However, INEOS may need to think carefully before pursuing a deal due to the midfielder’s past betting ban.
The Magpies could also demand a fee close to £100 million to sanction the sale of one of their key players to a direct rival.
If that proves to be the price required, United may ultimately be better off walking away from the deal.
