Kurdish Armed Groups Say Ready to Challenge Iran Amid Regional War
Kurdish armed groups say they are preparing to confront Iran’s government and are waiting for a broader uprising, according to a report by Agence France-Presse. Tehran, however, considers these Kurdish factions to be terrorist organizations and has repeatedly accused them of threatening national security.
AFP reported that, like several other Iranian Kurdish armed factions, the Kurdistan Free Life Party (PJAK) maintains bases in the mountainous areas of Iraq’s Kurdistan region. The group is also believed to have access to hideouts inside Kurdish-populated areas of Iran.
Despite their presence in the region, the report says these groups have largely avoided armed activities in recent years. Political pressure, particularly from Iraqi authorities hosting them, has forced many Kurdish factions to limit military operations.
This situation has raised questions among analysts about whether these armed groups currently possess the capability to launch a large-scale insurgency against Iran.
Since the start of the recent Middle East war late last month, tensions around Iranian Kurdish groups have increased significantly. The conflict began with waves of US and Israeli attacks against Iranian military and strategic targets.
Tehran has repeatedly targeted positions of Kurdish armed groups inside Iraq during the conflict, accusing them of working in the interests of Western countries or Israel.
Iran’s Revolutionary Guard has previously carried out cross-border missile and drone strikes against Kurdish bases in Iraq, claiming the sites were used to organize attacks inside Iran.
The broader war between Iran, Israel, and the United States has already caused significant casualties and damage across the region, raising fears of further instability and new fronts of conflict.
Analysts warn that if Kurdish armed groups become actively involved in the conflict, it could further complicate the war and expand tensions beyond Iran’s borders.
