Abdul Salam Zaeef Proposes Federal Alliance for Gulf and Arab States

Abdul Salam Zaeef, a former Taliban ambassador to Pakistan, has proposed that Gulf and other Arab countries form a joint federal government to strengthen regional cooperation and security.

Writing on X on Tuesday, Zaeef described the current geopolitical situation as a “golden opportunity” for Gulf states and the broader Arab world to build a stronger political and strategic alliance.

He said such a federal structure could unite regional forces by integrating armies, intelligence services, and other institutions into a shared framework designed to improve coordination among member states.

Zaeef added that the proposed alliance could also help regional countries respond collectively to the presence of United States military bases and promote technological development across the region.

However, the former Taliban diplomat did not provide details on how such a federal government could be practically established or which countries would formally participate in the proposed structure.

The proposal comes as the Middle East faces escalating tensions following the ongoing war involving Iran, Israel, and the United States. The conflict began in late February when US and Israeli forces launched large-scale strikes on Iranian military facilities and strategic infrastructure.

The war has already caused heavy casualties across the region. Reports indicate that more than 1,200 people have been killed in Iran and thousands injured, while Iranian retaliatory missile and drone attacks have also caused deaths and damage in Israel and neighboring countries.

After joint US and Israeli strikes on Iran, Tehran launched retaliatory attacks targeting American military bases in several Arab countries, including the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia.

Reports say that the growing regional conflict is prompting renewed debate among political figures about stronger security cooperation and new alliance structures in the Middle East.
