OpenAI Delays ChatGPT ‘Adult Mode’ Yet Again — Here’s Why
ChatGPT still isn’t stepping into adult-only conversations anytime soon.
OpenAI just announced it has once again postponed the release of the highly anticipated “adult mode” for ChatGPT. This feature is intended to give verified adult users access to erotica and other adult materials with the ability to engage in mature and sexually charged conversations with the platform.
Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, teased the feature late last year and promised a smooth rollout in December 2025. In a post on X on Oct. 14, 2025, he explained that the company went way too hard on censorship in a bid to protect people with mental health issues, but that made ChatGPT less enjoyable and useful to lots of users with no mental health issues.
He further wrote that they would “safely relax the restrictions in most cases” and that age-gating would be rolled out more fully before the feature launched.
In a statement to Axios, an OpenAI spokesperson said that the company still believes in “treating adults like adults,” adding: “Getting the experience right will take more time.”
What’s the big deal about ‘adult mode’?
The main idea behind this feature is not what most people think. It is not just about mature content, but about no longer treating every user like a child. Adult users would be able to access content that is currently restricted by default, while still keeping the AI safe for younger users.
This is obviously a delicate balance to strike, and OpenAI is taking its time to perfect it. It’s safe to say the delay is due to the complexity involved and the need to ensure the feature meets the company’s safety and responsibility standards.
OpenAI has been building a long-term age verification system, but early testing of its age prediction technology has revealed persistent accuracy issues that remain unresolved.
What adult mode actually is and isn’t
First of all, the feature is opt-in: you will have to go to your settings, verify your age, and then toggle the option on. If you don’t touch anything, nothing will change. Secondly, it will allow for more direct conversations, including direct medical conversations, frank relationship discussions, and mature, dark creative writing, with fewer robotic disclaimers.
On one hand, it is clear that there is some demand for this type of content, but on the other hand, there are concerns of potential risk, particularly when it comes to addiction and exploitation.
However, some things will remain banned, like illegal conversations, conversations involving minors in a harmful way, and anything non-consensual.
Why the delay, really?
The first delay, in December 2025, was reportedly triggered when Sam Altman declared a “code red” and sent an internal memo redirecting teams toward what he called higher priorities, including improving intelligence, personality, and proactivity. It also gave the team more time to work on the age verification system.
The latest postponement follows the same reasoning, with an OpenAI spokesperson confirming to Axios that the company is focused on improvements that benefit “more users” right now.
Ever since the lawsuit filed by the family of 16-year-old Adam Raine, who died by suicide after allegedly receiving guidance on methods from ChatGPT, as well as other related reported cases, OpenAI has been faced with the pressure to balance safety, user freedom, and ethical responsibility.
OpenAI has also been expanding teen safety protections and mental health safeguards in direct response to these cases.
