About the Role
KW Granite Club is seeking qualified personnel to achieve the highest possible ice quality based on industry standards through the curling season and for all events.
We are performing a dual search for one of the following:
Full-Time Seasonal Head Ice Technician (Employee), OR
Independent Contract for all Ice requirements (Contractor)
Full-Time Seasonal Head Ice Technician
This role will lead, schedule, manage, and co-ordinate the efforts of the ice team, and will maintain and ensure proper ice maintenance techniques by the entire team to ensure ice conditions remain consistent and of the best quality during all draws.
Full-time seasonal role (approximately 39 weeks between late July – mid April), ~40-44 hours/week including evenings/weekends.
• On-site at our Rink-in-the Park facility in Waterloo Park on Seagram Drive in Waterloo, Ontario.
• Reports to President.
• Employee position.
• This posting is for an existing vacancy expected to start in July 2026.
• The expected compensation range for this role is between $60,000 – $75,000 per year, depending on skills, qualifications and experience.
Independent Contractor for all ice requirements
The club is willing to listen to offers to contract the entire ice maintenance process for the entire season. This is a potential new path for the club and would love to meet with those that may prefer this path. Terms and conditions would be negotiated during the discovery process.
What You’ll Do
• Manage and conduct annual Ice Plant startup and shutdown process and maintain detailed, up-to-date daily maintenance logs.
• Prepare and maintain 6 sheets of championship quality curling ice, including pebbling, nipping, flooding, and resurfacing. Perform or direct at least two full scrapes per day during double-league days (one for half-days), plus pebble and nip before every league or rental draw.
• Perform and/or oversee mid-season major ice maintenance (e.g. Winter holiday break) and end-of-season ice removal, with external support as required.
• Hire, train, schedule, and supervise an Assistant Ice Technicians and Ice Assistants for scrapes, cleaning, and troubleshooting.
• Regularly assess and maintain or repair tools, equipment, and rocks, troubleshooting issues and gathering feedback from members and Board.
• Be present at agreed times for all major bonspiels and key evening leagues to monitor and optimize ice conditions.
• Collaborate with General Manager and Vice President Curling to establish the ice maintenance schedules, staffing schedules, maintenance schedules, and provide other requested information and reporting to executive team or others as required.
• Ensure all tasks executed are in accordance with all safety rules and always completed in a professional and courteous manner. This includes ensuring that all curler service areas are clean, stocked, and ready to use by the general public and members.
• Attend pre-approved Club-paid training clinics, courses, or seminars to update skills and knowledge and maximize effectiveness in the role.
• Act as a welcoming ambassador, prioritizing safety, quality, cleanliness, and professionalism of the Club and Staff at all times.
• Other assorted duties as requested by the Board of Directors.
What You Bring (Must-Haves)
• 3+ years’ hands-on experience making and maintaining curling ice (or equivalent).
• Basic refrigeration or proven experience in chilling and refrigeration associated with ice plants and knowledge in temperature monitoring and control.
• Curling-specific ice technician certification or equivalent experience (Curling Canada Head Ice Technician or higher).
• Previous experience leading and managing staff to achieve excellence.
• Experience managing, coaching and mentoring staff to ensure quality execution of work assignments and employee growth.
• Knowledge of health and safety regulations with the ability to spot and address safety risks.
• Knowledge and ability to complete ice making responsibilities, such as scraping, pebbling, and nipping.
• Ability to lift 50 lbs and work in cold, wet conditions.
• Reliable vehicle and valid Ontario driver’s licence (G class).
• Mechanical aptitude for equipment troubleshooting and ability to troubleshoot ice and ice equipment problems.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to manage multiple priorities, paired with excellent time management and organizational skills.
