Tottenham half-time player ratings vs Atletico Madrid – 1/10 player may have ended his Spurs career

The half-time whistle has blown in the Champions League match between Tottenham and Atletico Madrid, and it’s time for our player ratings.

Tottenham Hotspur head into the break 4-1 down at the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium in the first leg of their round-of-16 Champions League tie.

Let’s take a look at how the individual players got on:

Antonin Kinsky – It was far from an ideal start for Antonin Kinsky, who handed Atletico Madrid their first goal following a slip while attempting a goal kick. Not the start he or Spurs will have wanted. The mistakes continued when the young goalkeeper’s attempted pass ricocheted off his foot to Julian Alvarez, who slotted into an empty net. After 16 minutes, he was substituted for Guglielmo Vicario. He gets a point for turning up. 1.

Pedro Porro – He was very quiet for most of the half but managed to hit the target when he found himself in the box after Richarlison’s hold-up play. A goal that serves as a bit of hope, perhaps. 5.

Cristian Romero – Returned to the starting XI for the first time under Igor Tudor and it was a shambolic opening 16 minutes from the Spurs backline. He, however, did his usual job trying to help Tottenham play out from the back and also came close with a header from a Mathys Tel corner, which hit the upright. 4.

Kevin Danso – Was not directly responsible for any of the goals conceded and stuck to his assignment, getting his head on a few Atletico Madrid crosses while also offering a long-throw threat. 4.

Micky van de Ven – Managed to get a crucial block shortly before Diego Simeone’s men went in front following a cross and attempted shot from Marcos Llorente, preventing a certain effort on target. However, he was the next to slip on the Wanda Metropolitano turf, an incident that led to Atletico’s second. 3.

Djed Spence – Picked up an early yellow card after going in tight on Antoine Griezmann. He offered little going forward. 3.

Pape Matar Sarr – The Senegal international’s biggest contribution was an attempted own goal from an Atletico Madrid free kick, which Vicario kept out but led directly to Diego Simeone’s men scoring their fourth. 2.

Archie Gray – Nothing of great note from the youngster, whose biggest contribution was playing the pass that led to Mathys Tel’s shot, which was Spurs’ first effort on target. 3.

Mathys Tel – Showed early promise from the left early in the first half when he delivered a cross that caused a little confusion in the Atletico Madrid defence. He also managed Spurs’ first shot on target, although it was a long-range effort that barely troubled Jan Oblak. 4.

Randal Kolo Muani – The forward barely had any impact on proceedings as he struggled to impose himself or look after the ball properly. He could barely complete a pass or beat his man. 3.

Richarlison – The Brazilian managed an improvised shot in the first half after Jan Oblak’s long ball was intercepted by Micky van de Ven, who headed to Richarlison, but his effort went well wide. He later showed strength and assisted Spurs’ goal after holding off a couple of Atletico Madrid players. 5.

Substitutes

Guglielmo Vicario – Replaced Antonin Kinsky and was forced to make a few saves in the short time he was on the pitch. 5.
