Peterson, Offense Look in Season Form in 6-1 Win Over Cards
After a 9-0 shutout of the Marlins on Monday night, the Mets had a quick turnaround on Tuesday, welcoming the St. Louis Cardinals for a daytime matchup at Clover Park. The offense looked just as strong, notching 14 hits in a 6-1 win.

David Peterson took the mound for his first start of the spring. He gave up an early two-out home run to Nelson Velazquez in the first inning, but settled in and went on to pitch a complete four innings, giving just that one earned run on two hits, and struck out three. In typical Peterson form, half of his 12 outs came on the ground. He threw a total 52 pitches (35 for strikes).
The Mets’ offense was firing on Tuesday with just a week and a half left of spring training. Jorge Polanco was 2-for-2 with a gomer, Baty was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored, and Francisco Alvarez was 2-for-3 with a towering two-run homer over the batter’s eye in center. A.J. Ewing, Bo Bichette, Jacob Reimer, Ji Hwan Bae, and Jackson Cluff each had at least one hit as well.

After the Cardinals struck first with a home run in the top of the first, the Mets tied it up 1-1 in the bottom half two singles: one by Polanco and an RBI single by Baty that later drove him in.
The Mets extended their lead in the bottom of the third. Polanco got things started with a lead-off home run. As the top of the lineup continues to find their stride Bichette followed with a single and two batters later Alvarez went deep with his first home run of the spring to extend the Mets’ lead to 4-1.
They extended their lead in the fourth. After the Cardinals walked the bases loaded, Baty hit his second RBI single of the day that made it a 5-1 game.
That lead held, as Brooks Raley pitched one scoreless inning of relief before turning the ball over to Christian Scott, who worked through shaky command to throw three scoreless innings. Scott was absolutely electric through his first two innings and looked healthy as his first spring after Tommy John surgery continues. As his third inning of work got under way, he walked the first two batters he faced before a double play got him out of the inning.
The Mets have an off day Wednesday before playing the Cardinals again on Thursday, this time in Palm Beach.
