'Jeopardy!' Jabs Timothée Chalamet With New Category After Viral 'Ballet and Opera' Diss

Timothée Chalamet is still recovering from the comments he made about opera and ballet, after saying "no one cares" about either any more while making a point about the precarious popularity various artforms enjoy.

The latest jab came from Jeopardy!, who chimed into the conversation with a slick rebuttal to the Oscar nominee’s recent statement.

Jeopardy!'s Response to the Drama

On Monday, March 9, the long-running game show’s official Instagram account posted a clip of contestants showcasing their knowledge of both creative mediums in a “Ballet & Opera” category. “NOBODY @ HIM???? #TimotheeChalamet,” The show's social media account captioned the video.

Fans flooded the comments to show their support for this not-so-subtle jab, emphasizing just how well the video showcased the fact that a lot of people are well-versed in ballet and opera.

"Dying art ehh???? They flew through those answers!!!!!!!" one fan commented.

Another added, "My favorite part is how much it proves him wrong because they ALL answered at least one of them."

What Chalamet Said About Ballet & Opera

The classic game show's post comes two weeks after the 30-year-old discussed the importance of maintaining cinema’s relevance in a conversation with Matthew McConaughey at a Variety/CNN town hall. The star—who is currently nominated for an Oscar for Best Actor In A Leading Role for Marty Supreme—doubled down on his desire to sell tickets to his films.

“I don’t want to be working in ballet, or opera, or things where it’s like, ‘Hey, keep this thing alive, even though like no one cares about this anymore,’” Chalamet said during the conversation, laughing. “All respect to the ballet and opera people out there.”

The actor qualified his statement almost immediately, saying with some nervous laughter: “I just lost 14 cents in viewership. I’m taking shots for no reason."

The aforementioned comments have landed Chalamet in hot water with multiple different communities, reaching across different social media platforms earlier this month when his quotes resurfaced.

Celebs Respond

Actress Jamie Lee Curtis was one of the first to respond, posting in an Instagram story, “Why are any artists taking shots at any other artists?”

American opera singer Isabel Leonard added, “To take cheap shots at fellow artists says more in this interview than anything else he could say. Shows a lot about his character.”

Around the world, a myriad of Opera and ballet organizations joined in on the backlash. The Metropolitan Opera in New York City and the Paris Opera both released Instagram videos responding to the remarks, using the media coverage to promote their work and insist people still care about both art forms.

The Seattle Opera jumped in by offering fans a 14 percent discount in honor of Chalamet’s comments, writing, “Timmy, you’re welcome to use it too ???? See you at the opera!”

And, like any big story in pop culture, the jab made its way toSaturday Night Live. While Chalamet's comments weren't the subject of a whole skit, they were mentioned on Weekend Update by anchor Colin Jost, who mocked the actor's idea of what fans do and don't care about.

“Chalamet made the comment on a press tour for his movie about ping-pong," Jost joked, pointing out the irony of the situation.

What Does This Mean for the Academy Awards?

In the midst of this media frenzy, some fans are convinced these disparaging comments may hurt his chances of taking home the Oscar at the Academy Awards on Sunday. Though Chalamet is considered a strong contender for this year’s Best Actor Oscar with early awards-race wins, he lost both the BAFTAs and the Actor Award, the latter of which went to Oscar rival Michael B. Jordan for Sinners.

Following his comments about ballet and opera, Jordan's chances at the Oscars shot up, surpassing Chalamet. However, Oscar voting closed on March 5, which was prior to Timothée's comments blowing up, so it's unclear if they will have any affect on his actual winning odds.
