Ridley Scott's Divisive 2021 Drama Disappears From Netflix This Week
Ridley Scott's controversial 2021 drama House of Gucci is leaving Netflix this week after several months on the streaming platform.
The film—which received mixed reviews from critics and caused a stir when it was snubbed at the Academy Awards—follows the exploits of the real-life Gucci family in the 1970s.
'House of Gucci' Was A Critical Misfire
Despite lots of excitement when the project was first announced, House of Gucci ended up being a sizable disappointment for most critics. Beyond Lady Gaga's impressive lead performance, reviews generally criticized the film's uneven tone and lack of narrative depth.
The movie is based on Sara Gay Forden's 2001 book The House of Gucci: A Sensational Story of Murder, Madness, Glamour, and Greed, but Scott's movie took a much different approach to the story. Where Forden's book was gritty and down-to-earth, Scott's movie was overly sensationalized and filled with campy, theatrical performances.
This rubbed some critics the wrong way, who had expected Scott to adapt the book in his usual grounded style; but the finished product couldn't have been further from Gladiator or The Martian.
Despite the mixed reviews, House of Gucci ended up being a constant player in that year's awards season, with Gaga and Jared Letopicking up several nominations for their bold, unconventional performances.
They were both nominated at the SAG Awards and Critics Choice Awards, while Gaga continued her acclaim with Golden Globe and BAFTA nominations. She did not receive an Oscar nomination, which was one of the biggest surprises of the season.
Where to Stream 'House of Gucci'
House of Gucci is currently streaming exclusively on Netflix, so audiences will have to buy or rent the film once it leaves the platform this week. This can be done through any VOD service, such as Prime Video or Apple TV.
Rental prices typically sit around $3.99, while purchasing the film digitally will set you back either $7.99 or $9.99 depending on the platform.
