Texas Instruments and Nvidia Give Humanoid Robots Better Vision
Texas Instruments (TI) and Nvidia are teaming up on a sensor fusion system designed to make humanoid robots safer and more reliable outside the lab. The idea is straightforward: combine radar and AI computing so robots can better detect obstacles that cameras alone may miss, especially in complex real-world settings.
One of the biggest challenges in robotics is not getting a robot to move, but getting it to move safely around people, furniture, glare, dust, and reflective surfaces. Humanoid robots may look impressive in demos, but real deployment still depends on perception systems that can handle environments that refuse to cooperate.
Building a safer robot stack
TI said the partnership is focused on helping robotics developers validate perception, actuation, and safety earlier in development. Rather than pitching this as a magic fix for all humanoid robot problems, the companies are framing it as a way to narrow the gap between simulation and real-world deployment.
In a company announcement, TI said it integrated its mmWave radar technology with Nvidia Jetson Thor and Nvidia Holoscan to support low-latency 3D perception and safety awareness for physical AI applications. The broader pitch is that TI brings sensing, motor control, power, and deterministic control, while Nvidia supplies the AI compute and robotics platform.
The companies are also using the partnership to signal where humanoid robotics is heading. Instead of treating sensing, compute, and motion as separate engineering headaches, the collaboration leans into a more complete stack built for real-world testing earlier in the process.
That does not mean the industry’s safety problems are solved, but it does show how chipmakers are trying to tackle them as a systems problem instead of a one-part upgrade.
Where radar beats cameras
The most practical part of the announcement is TI’s emphasis on radar-camera fusion. Cameras are excellent at capturing visual detail, but they can struggle in conditions like glare, low light, fog, dust, and around transparent or reflective surfaces. Radar adds another layer of environmental awareness, which can help fill in those blind spots.
TI specifically highlighted glass doors and reflective obstacles as examples of where radar can improve consistency. That could be important for robots expected to operate in offices, hospitals, retail stores, and warehouses, where a missed obstacle is not a minor glitch but a safety issue.
The next test will come at Nvidia GTC 2026 in San Jose, where the companies plan to demonstrate how the system works in practice from March 16 through March 19. That demo should offer a clearer sense of how much radar-camera fusion can improve robot perception in environments that tend to trip up vision-only systems.
This is better understood as an enabling step, not a finish line. Still, in a field where robots often stumble on the ordinary, teaching them to see the tricky stuff may be one of the most valuable advances available.
