It was a big media day in Port St. Lucie to start the week!
On Monday, David Wright and David Stearns addressed the media. There were plenty of quotes from the legendary third baseman and the Mets’ president of baseball operations, ranging from topics like the Hall of Fame to rising prospects. David Wright Talks Bo Bichette, Hall of Fame
Speaking to the media on Monday, legendary New York Mets third baseman David Wright said that he loves “the energy and enthusiasm” that the team has right now. He added that the large number of new faces leads to guys wanting to impress their peers, which then leads to that high energy. Additionally, Wright spoke about what it meant to him to have Bo Bichette reach out to him.
“I was excited and surprised that Bo (Bichette) reached out to ask if I was coming down and if I had a few minutes for him. I am not sure what direction that is going to go into, whether that is third base, New York, or whatever the question set is. But I am excited to spend some time with him.”

Wright, asked about staying on the Hall of Fame ballot, said that surviving the ballot is a “pinch-me” moment. He added that he never thought he would survive one and that it means a lot. Regarding Carlos Beltrán, Wright called him one of the most “complete, five-tool baseball players” he’s ever shared a field with and added that the Hall of Fame is a “well-deserved” honor for him.
To no surprise, the last captain for the Mets was asked about the captaincy no longer being in circulation for the ball club, and Wright provided an answer in line with the rest of what the organization has said.
“To me, that signals that there are a lot of leaders in that clubhouse…When you have a handful or a group of leaders in there, that’s just as good, if not better, than having a single leader. It makes sense when you have the veteran group that you have in here.”
David Stearns Addresses the Media
During his press conference, David Stearns reiterated the optimism that Francisco Lindor would be ready for the Mets’ 2026 season opener.
“All indications are that it is going as planned. We have a similar level of optimism that he will be ready for Opening Day. Getting him in games is a prerequisite. We would not have his first competition be Opening Day. We would be sure to get him at-bats before then.”
The Mets’ president of baseball operations also said that no decisions have been made on Carson Benge yet. He said the right fielder has done a very nice job so far and that they are “seeing what they expected” from him. Stearns said that Benge has taken good at-bats, has been a tough out, and has provided good right field play. Called it a “tough decision,” but added that he”expects Benge to contribute to the team in 2026.

Regarding the clubhouse, Stearns called the team a “focused group.” Stearns noted the team is actively trying to get better every single day and added that it is “unique” to have that with a team full of veterans.
I had a chance to ask Stearns about the progression of A.J. Ewing, Jack Wenninger, and some of the organization’s other prospects during camp. In response, Stearns lauded how well they have “fit in” and complimented their professionalism.
“It’s been really encouraging to see, and if we are doing our jobs well, we should have this every single year. We should have good, young players in Major League camp every single year. We have it, and it has been good to see. I think all of those guys have performed well in camp and have handled themselves well. It speaks well to where they are heading.”
