At least 7 killed in weekend homicides citywide
At least seven people were killed throughout Chicago in weekend violence from 5 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday. Two of the attacks were double homicides.
The murders, which occurred in the Back of the Yards, Austin, North Lawndale, River North and Washington Heights, left victims from age 19 to age 71 dead, according to Chicago police.
- A 35-year-old man was pushed down a flight of stairs and killed while trying to intervene in a fight early Monday in River North. A man and a group of people were fighting around 1:20 a.m. when the man pushed the unidentified victim down the stairs in the 100 block of West Hubbard Street, police said. The man was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital where he died. The 32-year-old man who allegedly pushed the victim was arrested at the scene and charges were pending.
- Less than an hour earlier, two men were fatally shot in the Back of the Yards on the South Side. The two men, both 19, were sitting in a parked vehicle in the 5000 block of South Justine Street around 12:45 a.m. when a dark-colored sedan approached and two gunmen opened fire, police said. The younger man was shot multiple times in the body and pronounced dead at the scene, while the older man was shot in the back and was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center where he later died, according to police.
- On Sunday night, a man was found fatally shot in a vehicle in Austin on the West Side. Around 7:50 p.m., the 31-year-old man was found shot inside the vehicle in the 4700 block of West Arthington Street, police said. He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital with a gunshot wound to his chest and was pronounced dead, police said.
- Several hours earlier, a 25-year-old man was fatally shot in a North Lawndale home, authorities said. The man was arguing with another person at the home in the 2100 block of South Trumbull Avenue when the person pulled out a gun and shot the man three times in the chest about 8 a.m., according to police. He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
- Two women were fatally shot in the far South Side Washington Heights neighborhood Saturday night. Officers found the women — 68-year-old Phyllis Goolsby and 71-year-old Tuanna Thomas — fatally shot in the chest in the 10400 block of South Peoria Street before 11 p.m., according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office and police. They were both pronounced dead at the scene.
