Stones hurled at firemen in Limassol
Firemen came under attack on Sunday afternoon when unknown people started throwing stones at them as they were trying to extinguish a fire on a heap of wood and waste material in Polemidia, Limassol.
The report was received at 5.55pm and by 6.18pm the fire in the Ayios Nicholaos churchyard had been put out.
During the firefighting operation, unknown people started hurling stones at the firemen and the fire truck, which was damaged. There were no reports of injuries.
As soon as the police arrived, the perpetrators fled the scene.
The incident was deplored by firemen’s unions Pasydy and Sypyk, who called on the authorities to urgently investigate the incident, arrest the young individuals and impose exemplary sentences for targeting on-duty members of the fire brigade.
They said the job of firemen was difficult enough, without “mindless people” making it even more dangerous by hurling rocks at them.
The trade unions assured their members that they would uphold their rights.
“Such actions are unacceptable and deplorable,” they said and demanded the state take all measures to crack down on such “antisocial phenomena”.
