Disturbing: Couple Under Fire for Filming TikTok Dance at WW2 Memorial in DC (Video)
When TikTok user @madhu_raju_ uploaded a dance video to the platform, as well as to Instagram, he probably thought it was just another clever addition to the trendy duet dance “Don’t Rush Challenge.”
The location he used, however, was met with immediate backlash.
He and a female associate chose to do their dance in front of the WW II Memorial in Washington, D.C.
The solemn memorial honors the 16 million+ Americans who served and the over 400,000 who died in World War II. It features fountains, pillars, and inscriptions commemorating the war effort.
The clip, originally posted on TikTok and Instagram, resurfaced recently and went viral, sparking massive backlash.
Many highlighted how “extremely disrespectful”, “insensitive”, the stunt was at a place of remembrance and solemnity, and not a “TikTok set.”
The video has already garnered over 1 million views on X, where it was reshared, and was featured on two major India news outlets, Times of India and NDTV.
The accounts that originally uploaded the dance clip appear to have been deactivated at the time of writing.
While there is speculation about who the two people are, their identities have not been confirmed at this time.
The backlash is not only coming from Americans who find the display distasteful and insulting.
A group from India, Hyderabad Intellectuals Forum, noted on X, “In World War II, 30 lakh Indians sacrificed their lives. In such a war memorial place, for that to happen in a foreign country like this—dancing and clapping for Reels—is a disgrace to India itself.”
