New Leadership for Luxembourg’s Army – Claude Robinet to Take the Helm as Chief of Staff
On 1 October, General Steve Thull will officially step into retirement, marking the end of an era for Luxembourg’s armed forces. Following a selection process initiated in October 2025, Defence Minister Yuriko Backes announced on Friday that Claude Robinet has been appointed as the new Chief of Staff. Robinet’s mandate will focus on preparing the army for future challenges, adapting to shifting geopolitical dynamics, and integrating new technologies into military operations. A Veteran with Global Experience Claude Robinet’s Mission-Ready Background At 50, Claude Robinet brings a wealth of experience to his new role. Currently heading the army’s “transformation” department, he also serves as Luxembourg’s representative within Belgian defence structures. His operational credentials include participation in the KFOR mission in Kosovo in 2002 and a deployment to Afghanistan with the ISAF mission in 2011-2012. This diverse background positions him to lead the army through a period of modernisation and strategic realignment.
