UN says preparing assistance for Afghan returnees from Iran
The United Nations says it is preparing to support thousands of Afghan returnees from Iran as humanitarian challenges grow amid border tensions.
George Gagnon, acting head of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA), says the UN is preparing to support Afghan returnees from Iran.
The UN said Saturday that agencies including the International Organization for Migration and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees will assist returnees at border crossings.
These agencies will also provide support to communities hosting the returnees as more Afghans continue to return to the country.
Gagnon said clashes between the Taliban and Pakistan have complicated humanitarian operations and made aid delivery more difficult in several areas.
He warned about increasing civilian casualties linked to the recent cross-border fighting and its impact on vulnerable communities.
The UN official also said the organization and international partners are pressing the Taliban authorities to lift restrictions imposed on women and girls.
He expressed concern about declining international aid to Afghanistan, warning that reduced funding could worsen the humanitarian situation.
In recent months, thousands of Afghan migrants have returned from neighboring countries, including Iran and Pakistan, amid deportations and economic pressure.
Humanitarian agencies have warned that Afghanistan’s fragile economy and ongoing security tensions could make reintegration difficult for many returning families.
UNAMA recently reported that at least 56 civilians were killed in recent clashes, while Taliban authorities have claimed the death toll is higher than 100.
Aid agencies say continued international support will be critical to help returning Afghans and prevent further humanitarian strain across the country.
