Iranian Kurdish group weighs possible ground operation inside Iran
An Iranian Kurdish opposition group based in Iraq says it is considering launching a possible ground operation inside Iran amid the ongoing regional conflict.
Babashikh Hosseini, secretary-general of the Khabat Organization of Iranian Kurdistan, said such an operation has become “very likely” under the current circumstances.
In comments reported by Al Jazeera, Hosseini said the United States has contacted the group through various channels during the recent escalation.
He stressed that the group has not yet begun any offensive military action inside Iran but said preparations have existed for a long time.
Hosseini added that no final decision has been made, though the possibility of launching a ground operation remains high.
Iran has repeatedly carried out missile and drone strikes against bases of Iranian Kurdish opposition groups located in northern Iraq, particularly in the autonomous Kurdistan region.
Tehran says the attacks target armed groups it accuses of launching cross-border operations and supporting unrest inside Iran.
Several Iranian Kurdish opposition groups operate from bases in northern Iraq and have long opposed the Iranian government.
In previous years, cross-border tensions have occasionally risen as Iran accused Kurdish militant groups of launching attacks from Iraqi territory.
Reports warn that any ground operation by Iranian Kurdish groups could further complicate the regional conflict and risk expanding instability along Iran’s western borders.
