Winter Storm Warnings Announced for 9 States as 15 Inches of Snow, Strong Winds Emerge
Saturday, March 7, marks the first full weekend of the month of March, but while the first day of spring is just weeks away, the National Weather Service (NWS) continues to issue winter weather warnings for regions of the country.
While the first days of the metrological spring are already here, the NWS has issued winter storm warnings and watches for parts of the Midwest and Northeast, and weather experts warn that winter has one last blast of snow and cold left before the flowers start to grow.
Northeast, Midwest and Surrounding Areas Looking to Get an Upwards of 15 Inches of Snow
The Northeast is just weeks removed from the blizzard of 2026, but it's still dealing with severe weather. From Saturday, March 7, into the beginning of next week, areas of South Dakota, Nebraska, Minnesota, upper Wisconsin, New York, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts and Maine are dealing with winter weather cautions, according to the National Weather Service's official website. Upper elevations are looking at up to 15 inches of snow, while other areas may receive a few inches. Strong winds are also expected, although not as high as was seen during the blizzard of 2026.
The weather experts at AccuWeather also state that, according to their research, "A winter chill will return to the Midwest and mid-Atlantic, with potential snow next weekend in the Appalachians and interior Northeast."
The cold isn't expected to last long, though, as meteorologists expect a warmup in the Northeast, Midwest and throughout most of the country next week.
Expect Flood Risk to Escalate in Other Areas of the Country Through Sunday, March 8, Weather Experts Say
Meanwhile, the weather experts at AccuWeather warn of a flood risk that's set to "escalate" from Texas to the Ohio Valley through Sunday, March 8.
"Rounds of heavy rain will bring drought relief to parts of the central United States, but also increase the risk of flooding across portions of multiple states," they said in a statement provided to Men's Journal. "Texas to Arkansas flood risk Friday night through Sunday: Multiple storms will drench areas from the Rio Grande Valley of Texas to western Tennessee and southern Illinois and Indiana from Friday night to Sunday."
The statement added, "Rainfall totals are forecast to range from 2-4 inches, with locally higher amounts and an AccuWeather Local StormMax of 8 inches. Repeated rounds will saturate soils and accelerate runoff, increasing the risk of rapid small-stream and urban flooding."
