ChatGPT Comes to Excel as OpenAI Rolls Out GPT-5.4-Powered Spreadsheet Tools
OpenAI announced Thursday the beta launch of ChatGPT for Excel, an add-in that embeds the company’s latest AI model directly into workbooks, allowing users to build, update, and analyze spreadsheet models using plain language rather than writing formulas manually.
According to the company, the tool can help users build new spreadsheet models, update existing ones, and run scenario analysis directly within the workbook. Analysts can describe what they want in plain language, and the AI can automatically generate or modify the Excel model.
OpenAI said its goal is to reduce time spent on repetitive tasks, allowing professionals to focus more on analysis and decision-making.
The system can also explain how spreadsheet outputs were generated by linking responses to the exact cells used in the calculations. Before making any changes, the tool asks for user permission so edits can be reviewed or undone if necessary.
Powered by GPT-5.4 for finance workflows
The spreadsheet features are powered by OpenAI’s newest AI model, GPT-5.4, specifically the GPT-5.4 Thinking variant. The company says the model was trained to perform complex financial and analytical workflows.
According to OpenAI, the model shows significant improvements on tasks commonly performed by financial analysts, including modeling, scenario testing, and long-form research.
On an internal investment banking benchmark, which involves tasks like building three-statement models with proper citations, the new model’s performance jumped from 43.7% with GPT-5 to 87.3% with GPT-5.4 Thinking.
Beyond the finance world, GPT-5.4 is proving to be a formidable worker. OpenAI claims the model outperformed office workers 83% of the time on GDPval, a benchmark measuring performance on real-world tasks across 44 different occupations.
Financial data integrations added
Alongside the spreadsheet tools, OpenAI introduced new financial data integrations inside ChatGPT. The integrations connect the chatbot to market and research providers, enabling users to pull verified data directly into their workflows.
Data partners include Moody’s, Third Bridge, MT Newswire, MSCI, Dow Jones Factiva, and FactSet.
These connections enable users to access filings, company data, research reports, and market information while generating outputs such as earnings summaries, valuation snapshots, or credit memos.
OpenAI says the integrations are meant to reduce the need to switch between multiple tools during research or financial analysis.
Availability and early limitations
The beta is rolling out now to ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Team, Business, Enterprise, and Edu users. Currently, the rollout is limited to the United States, Canada, and Australia.
For corporate users worried about sensitive data, OpenAI noted that “data shared with ChatGPT Enterprise is not used to train or improve our models.” While the Excel add-in is the current star, the company confirmed that ChatGPT for Google Sheets is “coming soon.”
OpenAI noted that the feature is still evolving. Some responses may take longer while the company improves performance, and certain complex formulas may still require manual adjustments by users.
