North Carolina star Caleb Wilson suffers season-ending thumb injury
By JAMES MADDEN
North Carolina star forward Caleb Wilson suffered a broken right thumb during practice on Thursday and has undergone season-ending surgery on the injury, per release. Wilson was in the midst of his return-to-play process from a fractured hand he suffered in February when he broke his right thumb on Thursday.
Initial beliefs indicate that Wilson will recover fully and will likely be cleared for the NBA Draft process, with expectations that he’ll be drafted in the top-five in June.
Wilson was expected to return for Saturday’s game against Duke, but the recent injury will end the star freshman’s season in Chapel Hill.
In 24 games for the Tar Heels this season, he averaged 19.8 points, 9.4 rebounds and 2.7 assists per game on nearly 60% shooting.
The former five-star recruit was one of the few competitors with Duke star Cameron Boozer in the player of the year race before his season was cut short.
