Blackhawks trade Nick Foligno to Wild, reuniting him with brother Marcus
Nick Foligno's tenure as Blackhawks captain ended Friday, hours before the NHL trade deadline.
The affable veteran will finish out the season — a season that might be the last in his 19-year career — competing for a Stanley Cup with the Wild alongside his brother, Marcus.
Foligno, 38, had subtly signaled this might be coming over the last week, meeting multiple times with Hawks general manager Kyle Davidson and mentioning Thursday that the "competitor inside" him "wants to be playing meaningful games."
The Wild absorbed Foligno's full $4.5 million salary-cap hit, but the Hawks essentially received nothing in return, simply doing right by Foligno.
He provided valuable leadership and guidance for a franchise in transition over the last three seasons, shepherding in an entire new generation of Hawks.
His on-ice role diminished significantly late last season, however, and he had served as a fourth-line depth forward this season, tallying 11 points (three goals and eight assists) in 37 games. He recorded 37 and 35 points in previous two seasons as a Hawk.
The Hawks have now traded their entire prior leadership group — Foligno, Connor Murphy and Jason Dickinson — within the span of a week.
Connor Bedard and Tyler Bertuzzi will take over as alternate captains for the rest of the season, coach Jeff Blashill said. One more guy may be chosen to join them, but a permanent captain won't be named until the offseason at the earliest.
Meanwhile, Andrew Mangiapane, whom the Hawks acquired in the Dickinson deal, will make his Hawks debut Friday against the Canucks. His availability means the Hawks have enough forwards to fill out a full 12-man lineup.
