COSAFA and IPSO conclude Talent Identification Course to boost scouting in Southern Africa
COSAFA, in conjunction with the Gauteng Department of Sports, Arts, Culture and Recreation, concluded a comprehensive scouting education programme delivered in collaboration with the International Professional Scouting Organisation (IPSO) in Pretoria from March 3-6.
The course, conducted under the expert guidance of IPSO Education Director Colin Chambers, a seasoned professional football scout with over 25 years of experience, provided participants with high-quality, practical training in scouting and player analysis.
This initiative forms part of COSAFA’s ongoing commitment to developing talent identification and football expertise across the Southern African region, equipping scouts, analysts, and aspiring professionals with the tools needed to excel in modern football environments.
The programme featured a range of IPSO courses tailored to different stages of development:
Foundations & Fundamentals Talent Identification (TID) Course
Designed as an engaging entry point for beginners and those new to scouting, this self-paced module introduces core protocols and basics of scouting and analysis. Presented in a fun, computer game-themed format, participants “enter the IPSO Cup,” progressing through rounds of questions to reach the final and earn their first IPSO certificate.
The Observation Course
A focused 3-hour “Attention to Detail” programme emphasizing advanced observation skills. It explores body language, player and team behaviours, and environmental factors during matches. Drawing on extensive experiences, the course highlights common misinterpretations and offers deep insights essential for accurate assessments, from youth to first-team levels.
TID Youth Scouting to Under-23 Professional Level
A flagship course that targets youth and emerging talent identification, from grassroots to young professionals at professional clubs. It addresses age-specific scouting demands, emphasizing the critical evaluation of potential, a key entry point for most scouting roles in clubs and agencies.
Such partnerships between COSAFA and IPSO strengthen regional capacity building, fostering professional standards in talent identification and contributing to the growth of football across COSAFA member associations.
