CIF NorCal soccer roundup: Mitty overcomes Las Lomas, SRV boys, girls advance, Berkeley reaches final

Mitty returns to NorCal championship, will face SRV

Sure, this time it’s in Division II.

But for the third straight year, Archbishop Mitty girls soccer will play for a CIF NorCal championship after taking down eighth-seeded Las Lomas 2-1 on Thursday afternoon in San Jose.

The Monarchs (17-4-1) made the NorCal Division I championship game in 2024 and 2025, winning the former.

On Thursday, fourth-seeded Mitty was in trouble late before Brooklynn Collier equalized off “a great assist” from Penny Dela Cruz, Monarchs coach JT Hanley said. Mitty scored the winner with three minutes left in regular time as Laila Rocha turned in a pass from Zuri Brandt in the 77th.

Las Lomas scored its lone goal with 15 minutes remaining in the game.

“We showed our quality and character today,” Hanley told the Bay Area News Group. “One of our best performances of the season without a doubt. Las Lomas was relentless, but we stood up to the challenge and earned a spot in the final. I couldn’t be prouder of the girls. It was the best birthday gift I could have asked for.”

Opposing the Monarchs will be San Ramon Valley (15-3-2), which took down Cardinal Newman 1-0 in Santa Rosa.

SRV, the No. 7 seed in the bracket, has won four consecutive games away from Danville, including a penalty shootout at No. 2 Vista Del Lago (Folsom) in the NorCal first round.

Ashley Dodson scored the lone goal for SRV with the assist from Morgan VanPuffelen. Goalkeeper Emma Henzi had four saves, backstopping the Wolves to a shutout.

“This team is gritty,” SRV coach Mark Jones said. “This is our fourth road win in a row. Road warriors. Great bunch of athletes.”

SRV will have to do it one more time to win the NorCal Division II championship and advance to the inaugural state championship game in Sacramento. The two Bay Area teams will face off at 2 p.m. on Saturday in San Jose for the chance to go to state.

Berkeley moves on to D-II final

A battle of East Bay soccer powers concluded with six-seed Berkeley edging No. 2 De La Salle 2-1 in Concord, sending the Yellowjackets to the championship match, where they will face No. 8 San Ramon Valley.

In a mirrored finish, SRV (19-5-5) beat No. 4 Vintage 2-1 in Napa to advance on the other side of the bracket.

Berkeley (22-2-2) got goals from Jake Goetting and Caden Ascher Webber, the latter a golden goal in the final minute of extra time, to clinch the win. Preston Spalasso scored the lone goal for De La Salle with an assist from Bryce Vincent.

“Proud of our team for dealing with adversity all night against a championship-winning program,” DLS coach Derricke Brown said. “It was a great run, and I have nothing but love for our seniors.”

Mountain View falls short in D-I semifinal

A thrilling season for the Mountain View boys came to an end Thursday night in Davis, as the Spartans fell 2-1 to No. 1 Davis High.

Davis (16-4-3) scored twice in the first five minutes. Four-seed Mountain View started to catch up when Javi Teeter scored with 10 minutes remaining in the first half, but the Spartans couldn’t find an equalizer in the second.

“We spent the entire second half trying but couldn’t quite get one in,” MV coach Jim McGuirk said. “So proud of the effort after falling behind by two in the first five minutes. The boys went out the way they have played all year, with a ton of heart.”

Mountain View finishes 19-4-2.

Carondelet comes up short in PKs

Giant-killing eighth seed Carondelet was unable to follow its upset win over top seed Davis with another upset victory over fifth-seed Buchanan on Thursday in Clovis.

Tied 0-0 after regulation and extra time, the two teams went to penalty kicks, where Buchanan won 5-4 to advance.

Thus, Carondelet will not get an NCS Open Division championship rematch with second seed Bishop O’Dowd, which beat third-seeded Los Gatos 2-1 to reach the NorCal Division I title game. See the link here for the full story from O’Dowd’s matchup in Oakland.

Carondelet finished 16-4-3.
