Roommate Accused of 'Being Petty & Holding a Grudge' Over a Coffee Maker Says It's All About a Broken Promise
A woman is feeling upset after being accused of being “petty and holding a grudge” by her roommates, but she doesn’t see things the same way.
In Reddit‘s “Am I the A–hole” forum, the 28-year-old woman explained that she had been living with two 27-year-olds for more than a year.
Describing herself as “a coffee nerd,” she explained that she owned an expensive espresso machine that a roommate used without her permission.
She had to replace it after it broke. Now she really doesn’t want to share the replacement and is getting called out by her roommates.
To her, it comes down to a promise that one of her roommates made but didn’t keep.

In her post, she explained that her espresso machine cost roughly $400.
The roommate broke the machine because she “didn’t clean it properly,” leading to some issues.
Her response was to apologize and offer to buy a replacement. The Redditor said that she never did, though, and “just kept using the cheap drip machine instead.”
“Last week she asked to use my new one again (same model). I said no, because she still hasn’t replaced the last one she broke and I don’t trust her with it,” she wrote, noting that her roommate proceeded to call her “selfish” because “it’s just a coffee maker” and they were friends.
Her second roommate took the other woman’s side, telling the Redditor that she was “being petty and holding a grudge over ‘a kitchen appliance.’ ”
“I told them both I’m not sharing expensive stuff with people who don’t respect it,” she said, asking if it was the wrong decision.
A fellow Redditor was quick to reassure her, advising the woman to tell her roommates that she’s “not holding a grudge over an appliance.”
“You’re holding a grudge over the 400 dollars she owes you and apparently has no plan to pay back. It would, indeed, not be that big a deal if she had broken a 30 dollar coffee maker but this isn’t what happened here,” they continued, prompting the original poster to agree and highlight the way her roommate “promised to replace and then ghosted.”
Yet another Redditor agreed, writing, “Exactly, $400 is a lot to pay for a coffee maker. If I didn’t want to replace a $400 coffee maker I’d busted, here’s a life lesson — I wouldn’t use the $400 coffee maker. And if I messed up the last $400 coffee maker, I *sure* wouldn’t touch the replacement!”
One user had a more balanced response, saying that the woman wasn’t in the wrong “based on the way [she told the story].”
They were confused by the timeline of events, saying that there’s no way the roommate broke the coffee machine after one use.
“Still, it’s fine if you don’t want to share, but you have to accept that your relationship is going to suffer. As a final note, it would be [a--hole] behavior if you keep this rather large appliance on the shared counter full time if no one else is allowed to use it,” they added.
