Winter Storm Warnings Announced for 10 States as 12 Inches of Snow, 55 mph Winds Surface
It's technically March, but it sure doesn't feel like it throughout much of the United States, because on Friday, March 6, the National Weather Service (NWS) continued to announce warnings for severe weather in areas of the country.
Just as part of the country is getting over the blizzard of 2026, more snow is popping up heading into the weekend. While it won't be as heavy as the record-breaking snow in the blizzard, it's still shaping up to be a sizable storm.
It's actually two storms that are making their way through the U.S.: one in the Central Plains and Midwest, and the other in the Northeast. Either way, those living in 10 states should brace for severe weather as the weekend approaches.
Midwest, Central Plains and Northeast Face Up to 12 Inches of Snow Heading Into the Weekend in Isolated Areas
According to research from the NWS, Winter storm warnings, watches or advisories have emerged starting on Friday, March 6, and going into the weekend for Wisconsin, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Wyoming, New York, Pennsylvania, Vermont, New Hampshire and Massachusetts. These two storms could hit neighboring states, too, if the winds shift, so anyone in the Midwest, Central Plains and Northeast should stay alert for snow.
Snow totals will vary, but up to 12 inches is expected in higher elevations, as well as strong winds, up to 60 mph in some areas. In general, expect anywhere from a dusting to several inches over the weekend, but since it won't be too cold, don't' expect it to stick around long.
Meanwhile, other areas of the country are also getting hit with severe weather. "A several day stretch starts today across portions of the southern and central U.S.. Chances for damaging winds and hail, and tornadoes peak on Friday with an Enhanced Risk (level 3 out of 5), but all hazards look possible each day for the next week," the NWS stated on X.
Other Areas of the Country Looking at Flooding and Storms Over the Weekend
According to the weather experts at AccuWeather, other areas of the country will be in for severe thunderstorms and heavy rain over the weekend.
"A prolonged pattern of repeated storm systems will fuel multiple rounds of severe thunderstorms and heavy rain across a wide portion of the central United States today through the weekend and into next week," they said in a statement provided to Men's Journal. "AccuWeather expert meteorologists say a clash between warm air surging north from the Gulf and cooler Pacific and Canadian air pushing in behind strong cold fronts will increase the risk of damaging wind gusts, large hail, flash flooding and tornadoes."
According to the Farmer's Almanac, the first day of spring falls on March 20. The good news is that the NOAA's eight to 14 day forecast says that warmer weather is on the way for the U.S.
