Iran says it struck U.S. oil tanker after warship sinking in Indian Ocean
Mehr News Agency reported that Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said on Thursday it had struck a U.S. oil tanker in the northern Persian Gulf with a missile.
The reported strike came a day after a U.S. submarine torpedoed and sank the Iranian frigate IRIS Dena in the Indian Ocean, escalating tensions between Iran and the United States.
According to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, the American tanker was hit by a missile in the northern Persian Gulf and was left ablaze.
There has been no immediate confirmation from U.S. officials regarding the reported strike on the tanker.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi earlier condemned the sinking of the Iranian warship, warning that Washington would “bitterly regret” the attack.
The Iranian frigate IRIS Dena was reportedly sunk by a U.S. submarine near Sri Lanka on Wednesday, killing 87 sailors while dozens of others were rescued by the Sri Lankan navy.
The warship had recently participated in a multinational naval exercise and fleet review hosted by India in Visakhapatnam.
Iranian military officials also claimed they had taken control of the strategic Strait of Hormuz, a critical maritime route for global oil shipments.
The alleged attack on the tanker signals a sharp escalation in the maritime confrontation between Iran and the United States, raising fresh concerns over security in key global energy routes.
