Editor-Tested: A New Gen of the Ultra-Cushioned On Cloudmonster Is Here With Spring Colors & Even More Bounce

In the market for a new pair of running shoes for spring? You’re in luck. Recently, there have been so many early spring shoe drops, and the latest one has this shopping editor actually excited. On just dropped a new generation of their popular On Cloudmonster shoe, and I’ve got all the info you need to know, including whether it’s actually worth splurging on a pair yourself. Spoiler alert: yes it is!

The On Cloudmonster 3 is described as the “leveled up” version of their max-cushioned style. It features everything you loved from the previous generations, including its unique, chunky look and its forward-rolling, rocker shape design (now enhanced!). This time around, it was made with triple-layer CloudTec cushioning for much bigger bounce.

Truth be told, I’m not a huge runner, so my review of the shoes wouldn’t be coming from that perspective (I’m sure you can find a ton of others out there if you need). However, I have tested shoes during marathons, log a ton of steps at Disneyland on the regular, and do try be on my feet as much as I can throughout the week, even while working a desk job. So, if you are wondering whether these shoes are good for everyday use, jogging, or any upcoming spring break theme park trips, I’ve got you covered.

This would be my third style of On sneakers I’ve personally tried. Previously, I’ve worn the On Cloudnova,, which were incredibly comfortable and sparked my obsession with the brand, as well as the On Cloudrunner Max, another fantastic choice for everyday wear. I like sneakers that are plush and offer that extra bit of height, so I’ve always been drawn to On’s Cloudmonster line. After all, they are described as having “max cushioning” and I’m just the type of person who gets excited about things like that.

When I was given the opportunity to test out a pair of the new On Cloudmonster 3, I couldn’t wait to see if it lived up to the hype. That’s especially true since previous generations had tons of rave reviews over it being “extremely comfortable.” Nurses who work “10-12 hour hours a day” also named these their “go-to shoes.” There’s also just something about the design that I kind of like.

With that said, I was given a pair of the On Cloudmonster 3 in the Limelight/Seedling (above). The color is an electrifying neon yellow that really catches the eye. It makes it so versatile, that you can basically wear it with anything to give your outfit a pop of color. But if you don’t want something as bright or bold, the shoe comes in eight other color combos, including Nebula/Ivory, Sakura/Ivory, Truffle/Ivory, and White/Frost.

The shoe feels incredibly lightweight, even with its chunky design. I always like to size up with On sneakers and have never had any problems with the toe box feeling too tight or the shoes being too narrow for my feet. I’ve seen reviews saying that has been an issue with previous Cloudmonster generations. But for me, they felt comfortable right out of the box.

In fact, the very first time I wore them, I put them on in the morning, ran a few errands, walked around the mall for a few hours, and made it home in the evening with my feet feeling absolutely fine. The next day, I tested these by walking/jogging around the neighborhood and really liked how the bounce I get with each step. Due to its rocker shape design that helps you roll forward effortlessly, it really made each step super smooth.

I will say it might not be the most stable shoe for uneven surfaces or certain workouts, so that might be something you have to think about with these. The price tag is also something to consider as these will set you back nearly $200. So, they’re definitely an investment.

Verdict

As mentioned before, I’ve always been drawn to the look of the On Cloudmonster, so I would personally buy myself a pair of the Cloundmonster 3 just for looks alone. While I do like the neon Limelight/Seedling colorway, I wouldn’t mind getting one of the more neutral color combos like Truffle/Ivory or White/Frost. They’d probably be easier to pair with everyday outfits, so I’d get more use out of them overall.

I also like the cushioning these have, more specifically the bounce on these. I would sometimes catch myself bouncing in place, feeling a bit like Tigger from Winnie the Pooh. While I do enjoy a “plush” sneaker for its soft and squishy feel, I like how the On Cloudmonster 3 is more springy, which is makes it better when you’re on the move or being more active.

Is it worth spending the $190 to add these to your shoe rotation? It depends. If you’re just looking for a pair of Ons and the Cloudmonster 3 caught your eye, but you’re not sure about spending that much, the brand offers plenty of other options to choose from. Right now, you can even get previous generations of the On Cloudmonster for less by shopping their Last Season section.

On the other hand, if the Cloudmonster 3 has caught your interest and you’re curious if they live up to the hype, I’d say go for it. The On Cloudmonster 3 is a solid pair of comfortable sneakers, especially for walking or being on your feet all day.
