Outlander Final Season: Even the Cast Doesn't Know How It Ends
Sam Heughan has played Jamie Fraser for over a decade. He was on set for every episode of Outlander's eighth and final season. He was (obviously) there when they filmed the finale.
And he still has no idea how the show ends. Yes, really.
"We shot multiple endings," Heughan told Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show this week ahead of Friday's Season 8 premiere. "I was there. But I don't know how it ends, so I'll be watching with you."

Fallon pressed him on the internet's biggest question heading into the final season — whether Jamie Fraser dies in battle, as a prophecy in the trailer suggests. Heughan played along. "Jimmy, how dare you! How could you?" he joked, before acknowledging: "In the trailer, we do hear he gets a book from the future that tells him he's going to die in a battle. He's obviously not sure if this is true or not, but that is something he's certainly contending with this season. Does he die? I don't know. You'll have to tune in and find out."
The Rest of the Cast Is Also In the Dark
Heughan isn't the only one oblivious to the ending. In a separate interview with People, he admitted the uncertainty extends beyond just him. "We don't really know how it ends," he said. "We kind of know, but we shall see in the edit ourselves."
Caitríona Balfe echoed that, saying Season 8 was "probably the first one that we went in sort of blind." She described showrunner Matthew B. Roberts as keeping "his cards very close to his chest" — deliberately, given how many people had opinions about how the story should conclude.
Sophie Skelton, who plays Brianna, revealed that the production filmed multiple endings specifically to keep the conclusion a surprise — even from the people who filmed it.
What Heughan Is Promising Fans
Despite the uncertainty, Heughan was reassuring about what viewers can expect. He promised that "everyone does get their fair moment" in the final season, and described the ending as "epic" and "bittersweet" — while warning it would also be "tough viewing."
"I hope they feel we have done justice to the characters and to the story and to the fans," he said. "You know, it's hard. How do you finish a show like that?"
Outlander Season 8 premieres Friday, March 6 on Starz. New episodes air weekly, with the series finale set for May 8.
