Fetterman on Dems’ Iran ‘hysteria:’ ‘They’re afraid to agree with Trump on anything’

Democratic Pennsylvania Sen. John Fetterman suggested Wednesday that many of his fellow party members may privately support efforts to stop a nuclear Iran but are “afraid” to publicly align themselves with President Donald Trump.

The maverick swing state lawmaker, known for frequently breaking with his party, appeared on Fox News’ “Jesse Watters Primetime” shortly after he was the only Democrat to join almost all Senate Republicans in successfully voting down legislation seeking to restrict Trump’s military actions in Iran. Before introducing Fetterman as his guest, host Jesse Watters played a montage of several other elected Democrats, including Sens. Mark Kelly of Arizona, Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts and Rep. Shri Thanedar of Michigan, condemning the president’s strikes against the Islamic theocracy and arguing they failed.

“As a Democrat they are afraid to just agree with Trump on anything. Anything at this point,” the senator emphasized during his appearance. “And hey, I’m going to agree with it. I’m always going to pick my country over my party, and I’m always going to acknowledge when good things happen.”

“Senator, you go to these classified briefings with your colleagues. Why are Democrats running out of the briefing and screaming that this is a forever war, and it’s only Wednesday?” Watters asked Fetterman.

“I watched the highlights that you showed, especially the ship getting blown out of the water,” the senator replied, referring to footage of the operation Watters had interspersed between clips of critical Democrats. “I remember the Iranian generals were saying that our ships were going to end at the bottom of the ocean, and that is theirs.”

“Look at that again, it’s on the screen right now. Boom!” Fetterman continued. “I love it. So, I don’t know why we can’t … just celebrate that.”

“But I guarantee you every single member of the Congress that you had there said we could never allow Iran to acquire a nuclear bomb and now … it’s made that impossible right now,” the Pennsylvania Democrat added. “They all now say we won’t grieve that the Ayatollah is gone.

“Why can’t we as a Democrat just say, ‘Hey, I think that’s a good thing. I think the world is safer. I think it’s more just. And I do think we have a possible path for real, true, enduring peace in the region.’ I will say that,” Fetterman told Watters. “I will acknowledge that. Why they can’t? Because they have seen that too, and they all know we can never allow them [Iran] to have a nuclear bomb and that it’s better that he’s [the Ayatollah has] been killed.”

Fetterman on Wednesday morning appeared on CNN where he similarly criticized his fellow Democrats for their views on Trump’s Operation Epic Fury against Iran.

“So do you think the war goals have already been met? I think that, yes, it’s been very successful. And I can’t [understand why] we can’t celebrate that so far,” Fetterman said while on “CNN News Central.”
