‘Is abortion un-American?’ Being pro-life is a core value of nation, says culture analyst

Following the recent annual observance of Sanctity of Human Life Month in January, and with America poised to celebrate its 250th anniversary this July as a free nation rooted in Judeo-Christian values, a key question lingers: Is the sanctity of human life a core American value? In plain language, is abortion un-American?

Ironically, since the Supreme Court repealed Roe v. Wade in 2022, the number of abortions in America is actually slightly up. This is largely due to the dramatic increase in chemical abortions (mifepristone and misoprostol) – almost 2 out of every 3 abortions – which enables women residing in states where abortion is now illegal (generally “red” states) to obtain abortion pills through the mail – however illegal, as abortion pills are currently banned in at least 14 states.

On the other hand, last month the National Institutes of Health, under the direction of Jay Bhattacharya, M.D., revealed its new policy prohibiting the utilization of human fetal tissue in research funded by the NIH. The decision involves discontinuing the use of human fetal cells in both the NIH Intramural Research Program and all NIH-supported extramural research, which includes grants, cooperative agreements, other transaction awards and research and development contracts.

According to the NIH’s “Policy on Research Involving Human Fetal Tissue” document, the policy change represents a major achievement in the Trump administration’s initiative to advance biomedical research and promote innovation.

To that end, Bhattacharya stated, “NIH is pushing American biomedical science into the 21st century. This decision is about advancing science by investing in breakthrough technologies more capable of modeling human health and disease. Under President Trump’s leadership, taxpayer-funded research must reflect the best science of today and the values of the American people.”

So, is the preservation of human life – including in a mother’s womb – a core American value?

As everyone knows, America was established by predominantly Christian founders, and was structured in accordance with its founding documents, the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution, which, to the approval of the nation’s Christian community, uphold the value of human life and prioritize respect for it as a core principle.

The Declaration of Independence proclaims, “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”

WorldNetDaily spoke to Dr. Alex McFarland, a popular Christian apologist, author, evangelist, culture analyst and pro-life advocate, who insists preserving human life is a fundamental value to the United States of America.

“One of the cornerstones of our Republic is the sanctity of human life,” he asserted, saying the Declaration, the Preamble, the Bill of Rights, and the Constitution all affirm that “life is a gift from God.”

“Human life is not expendable,” he said, “so abortion is an obvious affront to our conviction of the sacredness of human life.”

For Christians in particular, he told WND, “Life is valuable, unique and sacred in all contexts. We have legal protection for the unborn. We have legal protection for those that are temporarily compromised, like in a health situation, a coma or temporary incapacitation. We don’t believe in medical euthanasia. We lovingly care for the elderly and the infirm.”

During his speeches on these topics at various universities, McFarland notes that both students and faculty members often express their objections, claiming he should not impose his religious beliefs on others.

“They’ll say things like, ‘The First Amendment prohibits the establishment of religion,'” he told WND. But his counterargument, while expressing his own Christian faith, is that beyond religion, “belief in the sacredness of human life is actually a moral, natural law precept.”

“It’s not a soteriological precept, like ‘Believe in Jesus and be saved’ – which I absolutely believe – but it is a constitutional position,” he argues. “Jefferson would say it’s a self-evident truth, the sanctity of human life.”

Even McFarland’s deceased friend, author-journalist Christopher Hitchens, who was a well-known atheist, became “an ardent pro-lifer. Although Hitchens was not a Christian,” McFarland told WND, “he did admit that if the constitutional protection for human life applies to any citizen, it should apply to all, and that would include the unborn.”

To honor the sanctity of life in America, McFarland concludes, “We must preserve our Constitution and preserve an ethic of morality, but to preserve morality, we have to begin with acknowledgement of and respect for all human life – even the unborn.”

“People can be religious or not,” he says, “but we in America must have a moral foundation, which for several decades has been all but lost.”

McFarland is the head of Alex McFarland Ministries, and is a national talk show host and speaker, educator and author of 20 books. He can be heard live on “Exploring the Word” on American Family Radio, airing daily on nearly 200 radio stations across the United States. McFarland hosted Charlie Kirk as featured speaker in late August, just three weeks before the TPUSA founder was assassinated on Sept. 10.
