Artificial Intelligence for Africa’s Defense Forces
“Artificial Intelligence for Africa’s Defense Forces: A Toolkit for Defense Sector AI Strategy and Adoption,” Africa Center for Strategic Studies, February 27, 2026
“The Africa Center for Strategic Studies has produced ‘Artificial Intelligence for Africa’s Defense Forces,’ a toolkit on AI strategy and adoption for the defense sector. The toolkit provides a framework for AI adoption for African policymakers and defense practitioners seeking to address critical security threats and enhance defense capabilities. The toolkit is informed by examples drawn from across the continent, comparative global experiences, and the deliberations of African warfighters and experts convened by the Africa Center for Strategic Studies in April 2025. It is tailored to Africa’s security landscape and informed by an understanding of AI’s risks and benefits. The toolkit includes over 20 case studies, resource lists, and risk management and strategy development tools to facilitate the adoption and mainstreaming of AI within their defense sectors.”
The toolkit follows a five-point framework, including:
- Rationales for AI adoption
- Areas of Application for AI
- Managing AI
- Adapting AI to the African security landscape
- AI strategy
