Forget Mbeumo: Carrick must be delighted with the Man Utd star who created three big chances vs Newcastle
Manchester United suffered their sixth Premier League defeat of the season after a frustrating night at St James’ Park on Wednesday.
Despite being reduced to 10 men just before half-time, Newcastle United showed immense resilience to secure a memorable 2-1 victory.
Anthony Gordon fired home before Casemiro equalised on the cusp of the interval.
William Osula came on in the 85th minute and delivered the knockout punch five minutes later.
While several United players produced underwhelming performances, club captain Bruno Fernandes stood out as the lone shining light.
Fernandes pulled the strings in midfield
The 31-year-old was initially at fault after conceding the penalty that allowed Gordon to open the scoring.
Determined to make amends, Fernandes responded with authority, driving United forward in search of a quick equaliser before half-time.
His moment of redemption arrived when he whipped in a pinpoint cross for Casemiro, who glanced his header beyond the goalkeeper.
Fernandes continued to orchestrate the attack throughout the match, threading incisive passes that few others on the pitch could envision.
He created three big chances and eight key passes.
The Portuguese magnifico spotted a late run into the box from Manuel Ugarte and delivered a brilliant cross-field pass.
Ugarte guided his looping header just over the bar.
Just a few moments before, Fernandes had floated a delicate cross towards the far post where the unmarked Leny Yoro powered a header goalward, only for the goalkeeper to pull off a sensational save.
Perhaps his finest pass arrived around the hour mark when he slipped a perfectly weighted through ball to Bryan Mbeumo.
Instead of shooting first time, Mbeumo chose to square the ball for Benjamin Sesko, allowing the chance to slip away.
Fernandes now boasts 14 assists this season, but based on his creative brilliance against Newcastle, he arguably deserved at least one more.
Unfortunately for United, his teammates failed to convert the opportunities he so expertly crafted.
