63 Years Ago Today, This Legendary Rock Group Scored Their First No. 1 Hit
On March 5, 1963, The Beatles released "From Me To You"—the single that would go on to become their first No. 1 hit in the United Kingdom.
Although the song wasn't an immediate success in America, it would later climb the charts and reach No. 41 on Billboard's Hot 100 following the "Beatlemania" frenzy.
'From Me To You' Marked A Turning Point for The Beatles
While The Beatles' first two singles had been fairly successful in America, it wasn't until "From Me to You" that they finally topped the charts and proved that they had what it takes to be a worldwide phenomenon.
"Love Me Do" and "Please Please Me" had both helped The Beatles develop a dedicated fan base in the U.K, but the group knew that it would take a massive hit like "From Me To You" for their label to approve a U.S. tour.
The single's release came shortly after The Beatles' debut album, Please Please Me, was put on sale in the U.K. The album had been a huge success, charting at No. 1 on the weekly charts and reaching No. 2 on the year-end charts.
While The Beatles were undeniably successful before "From Me To You", they were primarily known for their covers of high-profile rock-and-roll songs. Tracks like "Anna (Go To Him)" and "Twist And Shout" proved that the band could perform, but "From Me To You" solidified that they could also write.
The single was written by Lennon & McCartney, with the songwriting credited to both frontmen equally—as all their songs were. But this song truly was a collaborative effort, as the two friends wrote it together on the tour bus after reading the "From You to Us" column in NME Magazine (via American Songwriter).
"From Me to You" initially sold less than 4,000 copies when it was released in America, but it became a retroactive hit once The Beatles made their journey across the Atlantic and became international stars.
