Iran says U.S. struck warship ‘Dena’ in international waters without warning
Abbas Araghchi said an Iranian naval frigate was struck by the United States in international waters without prior warning, calling the attack a “major disaster.”
In a message posted Thursday on X, Araghchi said the Iranian warship Dena was attacked about 2,000 miles from Iran’s coast while sailing in international waters.
He said the vessel was visiting the Indian Navy and was carrying about 130 crew members when it was targeted, warning that Washington would “deeply regret” the precedent set by the strike.
Officials in Sri Lanka said Wednesday the Iranian warship was attacked off the country’s coast, leaving at least 80 crew members dead and several others injured.
Sri Lankan authorities said rescue operations were launched after a distress request was received, and naval forces rescued 32 survivors who were taken to hospitals in the port city of Galle for treatment.
Pete Hegseth confirmed that a U.S. warship struck and sank the Iranian vessel, saying American forces believed the ship was operating in what it thought were safe international waters.
The attack comes amid escalating conflict between the United States, Israel and Iran following a wave of coordinated strikes that have intensified tensions across the Middle East.
The sinking of the Iranian warship marks one of the most serious naval incidents in the widening conflict and raises fears of further escalation at sea.
