Iranian drones strike airport in Azerbaijan’s Nakhchivan, Baku summons Tehran envoy
Iranian drones struck Azerbaijan’s Nakhchivan International Airport early Thursday, injuring two people and prompting Baku to summon Iran’s ambassador.
Iranian drones struck an international airport in Azerbaijan’s Nakhchivan region on Thursday, injuring two people, Azerbaijani authorities said.
According to Reuters, Azerbaijan’s foreign ministry confirmed that the attack targeted the Nakhchivan International Airport.
Reuters, citing a source in the Azerbaijani government, reported that missiles and drones fired from Iran hit a terminal at the airport early Thursday.
The airport lies about 10 kilometres from the Iranian border in the autonomous Nakhchivan region. Following the attack, Azerbaijan’s foreign ministry summoned Iran’s ambassador in Baku to lodge a formal protest.
The incident comes as fighting between Iran and the United States–Israel alliance has intensified across the Middle East, raising fears that the conflict could spill into neighboring regions.
Tensions between Iran and Azerbaijan have fluctuated in recent years, particularly over security concerns near their shared border and regional geopolitical rivalries.
Analysts warn that the strike on Azerbaijani territory could further complicate the regional situation if diplomatic efforts fail to prevent wider escalation.
