Sports Briefs: AW grad Heimbrodt earns WCC honors with Seattle
Seattle University’s Will Heimbrodt, an Archie Williams High grad, was named the West Coast Conference Defensive Player of the Year. Heimbrodt averaged a team-best 5.1 rebounds during 30 games this season and collected a team-high 78 blocks, as well as 38 steals.
The redshirt sophomore leads all WCC players with 44 blocks in 18 conference games (2.4 per game). During WCC play, Heimbrodt also ranks 10th in rebounds (5.7 per game) and 14th in steals (1.2 per game.). The redshirt sophomore from San Anselmo is two away from becoming Seattle’s all-time leader in single-season blocks.
Seattle plays Friday in the WCC playoffs against the winner of Thursday’s contest between Loyola Marymount and San Diego.
Prep baseball
Jacob Pinguelo registered 11 strikeouts as he threw a one-hitter in Marin Academy’s 19-0 five-inning victory over non-league foe Making Waves Academy in Richmond on Wednesday.
At the plate, Pinguelo was 2-for-3 with three RBIs and two runs, while Desi Derrick-McGlynn had a pair of hits with three RBIs and three runs. Daniel Puente was 2-for-3 with a pair of runs and an RBI for the Wildcats (1-0).
- Theo Trono was 3-for-3 with a pair of doubles as Redwood High powered to a 5-2 victory over Sacred Heart Cathedral Prep in Wednesday’s non-league action in Larkspur. Noah Gersch doubled to score Trono in the second inning. Jack Moseley had a pair of RBIs during Redwood’s four-run outburst in the first inning. Ethan Ferry also doubled and scored for Redwood (2-0-1).
- Kingston Weinberg hit a solo home run and Jasper Adams doubled, but it wasn’t enough to lift Archie Williams High, which fell behind early in Wednesday’s 10-2 loss to Analy in San Anselmo. Adams doubled, and Hugo Slavinsky and Jake Barnes each had a base hit for the Peregrine Falcons (1-3).
Boys golf
San Marin’s lineup was the model of consistency as the Mustangs posted a 219-244 victory over San Rafael at Indian Valley Golf Course on Wednesday. Jordan Priolo, Duke Mesenburg and Dylan Cain each carded a 42 for San Marin, tied with the Bulldogs’ Logan Dean.
Women’s lacrosse
Dominican University (4-1,1-0) fell 11-8 to Wilmington University in a matchup of unbeaten teams Wednesday afternoon in San Rafael. Ryan Bionda led the Penguin offense as she went for a game high five goals while scooping up a couple ground balls. Kyra Evans, Alayna Cipolla and Morgan Newkirk also scored for the Penguins.
Men’s lacrosse
Will Elfline scored five goals for Dominican University of California during Wednesday’s 11-8 loss to Dominican-NY in San Rafael. Hunter Smith won 12 face-offs and picked up eight ground balls for the Penguins (0-4, 0-1), while Kenny Seiler netted a pair of goals and Tanner Ennis also scored.
