Man Utd Player Ratings vs Newcastle: Mbeumo struggles but 1/10 flop must never be trusted again
Manchester United suffered their first defeat under interim head coach Michael Carrick against Newcastle United on Wednesday evening.
The hosts burst out of the blocks with ferocious intent, pinning United deep inside their own half from the opening whistle.
The Red Devils gradually found their rhythm, with Benjamin Sesko and Matheus Cunha both threatening to shatter the deadlock.
Jacob Ramsey picked up his second booking of the evening for simulation inside the penalty area.
Anthony Gordon kept his composure to drill Newcastle ahead from the spot after winning the penalty himself in the third minute of first-half stoppage time.
United responded in familiar fashion, as Casemiro met a perfectly delivered set-piece from Bruno Fernandes to power home the equaliser.
The visitors pushed hard for a winner and carved out several clear openings, but Aaron Ramsdale stood tall with a magnificent display.
Without him, Newcastle might well have been staring at a 3-1 defeat.
It looked like the Magpies would earn a point, but substitute William Osula struck in the 90th minute, capitalising on a costly defensive lapse to snatch the decisive goal.
Player Ratings
Senne Lammens – 5/10
Beaten from the penalty and was unsighted for the second goal after Maguire blocked his view.
Noussair Mazraoui – 5/10
Solid at right-back but had to be taken off after picking up a knock.
Leny Yoro – 6/10
Solid performance from the Frenchman and unlucky not to score after a wonderful save from Ramsdale.
Harry Maguire – 5/10
He could have closed down Osula for his match-winning strike but showed trust on unreliable Malacia.
Luke Shaw – 4/10
Picked up a booking for a foul on Elanga. He was taken off at the hour mark, potentially due to fitness issues.
Casemiro – 7/10
Caught in possession by Gordon, who went on to win the penalty. Redeemed himself in perfect fashion by scoring the equaliser on the cusp of half-time.
Kobbie Mainoo – 5/10
His curling effort seemed destined for the top corner, only for Ramsdale to produce a superb full-stretch save.
Struggled alongside Casemiro as United were overrun in midfield.
Bruno Fernandes – 8/10
Conceded the penalty but responded in emphatic fashion, supplying a pinpoint cross for Casemiro’s equaliser. He continued to orchestrate proceedings and was unfortunate not to add at least two more assists to his tally.
Matheus Cunha – 7/10
Drifted past three Newcastle defenders to unleash a fierce effort and repeatedly got the better of Kieran Trippier down the flank. However, his influence waned after the interval as the game slipped away from United.
Bryan Mbeumo – 4/10
Should have put United 1–0 up after Ramsdale parried Cunha’s strike straight into his path. He was gifted another opening thanks to Fernandes’ superb vision, yet hesitated at the crucial moment and passed up the chance to shoot.
Benjamin Sesko – 5/10
Displayed sharp footwork to wriggle out of tight spaces and link play intelligently. However, he was starved of meaningful service throughout the evening. No late goals today.
Substitutes
Diogo Dalot – 5/10
He was sent on to deliver crosses for Sesko and Zirkzee but he failed.
Manuel Ugarte – 5/10
His header hit the roof of the net.
Joshua Zirkzee – 6/10
Fired a shot but Ramsdale made another stunning save.
Amad Diallo – 4/10
Diallo did not had any impact on the game.
Tyrell Malacia – 1/10
Dreadful defending for Newcastle’s second goal. He should not play for United again.
