Parenting Children With Disabilities Inspired Olympian Elana Meyers Taylor to Greatness

Elana Meyers Taylor won gold in the U.S. bobsledding Winter Olympics, but her motivation went far beyond medals and personal achievement. Her true drive comes from her two sons, both of whom have disabilities. Her son Nico has Down syndrome and is deaf, while her son Noah is deaf as well.

In her post-win interview, Meyers Taylor shared the profound impact her sons have had on her life and career. “It meant everything, especially having Nico and Noah there and knowing how much they sacrificed,” she told NBC. She emphasized that her boys had been with her through every step of the journey, traveling across Europe since November 1.

“Parenting my two sons with disabilities has done everything for me,” Meyers Taylor said. “It’s given me patience, it’s given me the drive to keep going, and it’s made me realize that even my worst days on bobsled are better than the worst days as a parent.”

Her words remind us that Life in all its forms is precious. Even in a world where 60 to 90 percent of babies diagnosed with Down syndrome in the womb are aborted, Meyers Taylor’s sons are living proof of the unique joy, purpose, and inspiration that every child can bring. She reflects, “They mean everything to me, and at the end of the day, if I win medals or lose medals, it doesn’t matter, because I’m still mom to them. I still get to go home and get cuddles.”

Elana has embraced the challenges of parenting her children, and in doing so, she has become not only a better athlete but also a more compassionate human being. She told NBC in 2022, “The moment he [her son with Down syndrome] was born, he became my sole focus. You know, I was going to do whatever I needed to take care of him. If that meant giving up bobsled, that’s what was going to happen.”

Her commitment to her children is a powerful reminder that every life has inherent value. “I want to prove to him that just because you have stuff to overcome, does not mean you have to stop going after your dreams. The world might tell you, ‘you can’t do this, you can’t do that,’ but there are no limits to what he can accomplish,” she said.

Elana Meyers Taylor’s story shows that true victory is measured not just by medals but by love, sacrifice, and the courage to nurture life, no matter the challenges. Her journey inspires us to celebrate the dignity of every child and the incredible potential each preborn baby holds.
