Anna Camp Is Under Fire For Controversial ‘Scream 7’ Retweet
Anna Camp says she made a mistake retweeting a statement critical of the Scream 7 boycott.
The Pitch Perfect and True Blood star shared the post, which was supported of her latest project, Scream 7.
The tweet said:
“The boycott didn’t work
The critics hate didn’t work
The pathetic leaks didn’t work
What worked was audiences coming out and making the film a success. #scream7″
On the surface this tweet seems pretty innocuous. However, fans of the Scream movies know that the context is a fan boycott of Scream 7 due to production’s unethical firing of franchise star Melissa Barrera for calling the situation in Palestine a “genocide” on her social media.
The sudden firing resulted in Scream 7 undergoing extensive and expensive reworking as the plot was initially set around Barrera’s character. The script got a $500k rewrite, a new director was hired, and they (finally) paid Neve Campbell what she was worth to return. By throwing money at the self-inflicted problem, they actually got a pretty decent movie (as far as 6th sequels in a horror franchise go) made.
But some fans still chose to boycott as no apology was ever made to Melissa Barrera. Anna Camp’s retweet was seen as disrespectful both to Barrera and to fans who were boycotting for ethical reasons or out of loyalty to the character of Sam Carpenter.
Camp tweeted an apology, saying, “It has come to my attention that I reposted someone else’s story that does not reflect my personal beliefs. I have since deleted the repost because I absolutely meant no harm. I’m sorry to anyone who was affected.”
Scream 7 has been a box office success. The $97.2 million opening weekend (globally) has resulted in Scream becoming a billion dollar franchise. There are only six other horror franchise that have achieved this status.
