Fitness concern: Three solutions for Carrick after Shaw setback ahead of Newcastle clash
Manchester United are set for a stern Premier League examination against Newcastle United at the iconic St James’ Park later today.
United head coach Michael Carrick has a big decision to make on Luke Shaw.
The 30-year-old has remarkably started every Premier League fixture of the 2025-26 campaign.
That consistency marks a notable milestone for the Englishman, given his long and frustrating history with injuries.
Concern resurfaced when Shaw collided with Daniel Munoz in the 24th minute of the previous match and was forced off. He also had tape just under his knee.
Carrick confirmed in the pre-match press conference that the England international had been ill, and a late fitness test would ultimately determine his involvement.
We believe Carrick has three realistic alternatives to fill the void at left-back.
Noussair Mazraoui was introduced in place of the former Southampton defender in the last outing.
He endured a shaky opening period but grew into the contest, delivering a far more assured performance after the interval.
Mazraoui played as a left-back for Morocco in the recently concluded Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
The Premier League presents a different challenge, with elite attackers primed to punish even the slightest lapse.
In truth, Mazraoui appears far more natural on the right flank.
Another option is Diogo Dalot, who boasts greater experience at left-back and could be entrusted with the role if Shaw is sidelined.
Forgotten ace Tyrell Malacia is the third alternative. The Dutch international is likely to leave Old Trafford when his contract expires at the end of June.
Malacia has managed just one appearance all season, a brief cameo in the reverse fixture back in December.
Ideally, Carrick would prefer the reliability of Shaw, but should the defender fail his late test, the United boss must decisively select one of his three understudies.
