Beloved Best Picture Winner Is Leaving Netflix This Week
Robert Zemeckis' Oscar-winning drama Forrest Gump will be leaving Netflix later this week.
The film will be removed from the streamer's catalog on Thursday, March 5—but don't worry, there are plenty of other places to stream the beloved movie.
'Forrest Gump' Is One of The Most Popular Movies of The '90s
The early '90s were arguably Tom Hanks' most successful period; in the space of just a few years, he'd found massive succes with Philadelphia, A League of Their Own, and Sleeplessin Seattle. Forrest Gump was the culmination of this intense winning streak, and it was an immediate hit.
The film grossed over $678 million at the worldwide box office, making it one of Hanks' biggest commercial successes ever (via Box Office Mojo). It was also a huge critical hit, receiving rave reviews and making its way to No. 12 on IMDb's Top 250 Films list.
The Forrest Gump-mania continued into 1995, where the film dominated the Academy Awards and took home the top prize of Best Picture. The film came at the perfect time, with its overtly sentimental take on the American dream resonating with audiences across the globe.
'Forrest Gump' Is Ending Its Netflix Run
Forrest Gump has been available to stream on Netflix for a long time, but the film is finally being taken off the platform to make room for new projects and returning classics.
Thankfully, this doesn't mean Forrest Gump will be leaving streaming altogether. The film is still available to stream on Prime Video and Paramount Plus—but be quick, because it's also leaving Prime later this month.
For those who only have access to Netflix, there are plenty of other great Tom Hanks movies available on the platform. Whether it's charming romcoms like You've Got Mail or riveting character dramas such as Cast Away, there's something for everybody.
