Nancy Guthrie Update: Former FBI Agent Says Case is 'Red Hot' With Evidence

As authorities continue to investigate the apparent kidnapping of 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie, there has been growing concern that the investigation is turning into a "cold case." However, one former FBI agent does not share those fears.

Even though there have been a lack of substantial updates in the case over the past several months, one former FBI agent believes that the case is still "red hot" with actionable leads and thinks it's still completely possible that the case breaks wide open at any one of them.

Cold Case Fears Emerge

Just over a week after Guthrie's disappearance, the FBI unveiled a collection of photos and videos captured by a doorbell camera, depicting an armed, masked individual outside Guthrie's home on the day she vanished and, apparently, on at least one prior occasion.

The footage represents what may be the most compelling evidence the FBI has made public in the case thus far, but it has not been enough to make any substantial progress in the case leading TMZ to report that there is growing fear the investigation is turning into a "cold case."

With the investigation dragging on and little concrete progress to show for it, Nancy's daughter Savannah took to social media to share a heartfelt message, acknowledging the very real possibility that her mother may no longer be alive.

"We also know that she may be lost. She may already be gone. She may have already gone home to the Lord that she loves. And is dancing in heaven with her mom and her dad. And with her beloved brother Pierce. And with our daddy. If this is what it is to be, then we will accept it," Savannah Guthrie said.

Case is 'Red Hot,' Former FBI Agent Says

While some might be concerned that the case is going cold, one former FBI agent does not think that's anywhere close to the truth.

Jennifer Coffindaffer, a retired FBI Special Agent and former SWAT Team member who now contributes to NewsNation, has been sharing her opinions on the case on social media throughout the investigation. In a recent post, she took aim at anyone declaring that the investigation might be a "cold case."

"Anyone reporting that Nancy's case is cold has no idea what that term means and has never worked a day of law enforcement in their life," Coffindaffer wrote in a post on X.

Coffindaffer went on to explain that the FBI actually has many leads that they continue to look into.

"The FBI has so many video leads that they have relocated to Phoenix for additional analytics resources," Coffindaffer continued in her post. "They have a glove, DNA from inside the house, videos, Porch Guy leads and so much more we know nothing about."

"This case is red hot in terms of actionable leads…." she said. "It only takes one good one to break the case wide open."

FBI Continues to Have Hope

While TMZ reported last week that the case was turning into a "cold case," TMZ’s Harvey Levin cited information from the FBI about why the agency still has hope, and his explanation goes right along with what Coffindaffer was describing.

“Even though this is becoming a cold case, and it is clearly one of the reasons why the Guthrie family has upped the reward, that doesn’t mean that it’s over,” Levin said in a video shared to social media. “As one FBI source put it, ‘It just takes that one person.’ And they believe it’s going to happen at some point – one person who opens his or her mouth, and the case cracks wide open.”

The Guthrie family has been maintaining that hope, as well.

"We know that millions of you have been praying. So many people have been praying of every faith and no faith at all. Praying for her return, and we feel those prayers," Savannah Guthrie said in her social media post last week. "Please keep praying without ceasing. We still believe. We still believe in a miracle. We still believe that she can come home. Hope against hope. As my sister says, we are blowing on the embers of hope."

For now, authorities are continuing to investigate any and all leads in the case.
