Hilary Duff Talks 'Lizzie McGuire' Inspiring Her to Become a Pop Star, Working On New Album With Husband Matthew Koma

Hilary Duff is opening up about her new music and making peace with her first major role.

The 38-year-old “Future Tripping” singer and actress made an appearance on The Drew Barrymore Show, which aired on Tuesday (March 3), where she dished on an array of topics, from motherhood, returning to the stage and making new music again.

“I think it took me like a good 10 years to make peace with like Lizzie McGuire. You know, it was, it’s weird to like play a character that people fall so in love with that doesn’t grow up,” Hilary told host Drew Barrymore. “She stays that age and then I grew up. You know what I mean? And so now I’m like obsessed with her and I like get to join the fandom and be excited like everybody else, even though I like was her, but for a while it was a hard thing to be like changing and evolving and, but everywhere I went, like I was this to people.”

Drew then asked if she made a conscious decision to separate herself from Lizzie.

“I think that was why I became, I wanted to be a pop star. You know, the second I, I finished filming Lizzie, I was like cool, I don’t wanna be called that anymore, and I’m gonna be, I’m gonna make music, and I’m gonna get a record deal, and I’m gonna be a pop star,” Hilary said. “[And] I did.”

The “Weather for Tennis” singer also got emotional while talking about working on her new album luck… or something with husband Matthew Koma, who co-wrote and produced the new LP.

“He’s the best to work with ever, and it was like such a healing experience for myself, but also for our relationship. Like we leveled up during that time. It was really, really cool,” she said. “I felt like, this could actually maybe make me cry. I know, I think you’re gonna respond to this as well, you take care of so many people for such a long time and I felt like in this creative zone in my life that I really, really wanted and I’d been thinking about for like many, many years.”

“I felt so taken care of by him and so, like absolutely, it was so like selfless that he was just like, ‘Let’s just make this for you. Let’s talk about all the things that that like bounce around inside here,’” Hilary continued. “And then he just executed it so beautifully and I got to like interior design the whole process, which is exactly what I like to do, you know, to make it just 100% like authentically mine.”
