JUST IN: Police Arrest Potential Gunman at Paxton Watch Party
Police in Dallas, Texas, arrested a man outside of Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton’s election watch party on Tuesday evening and hauled him off after finding ammunition for multiple different weapons in his car.
The man was reportedly wearing a face mask, a hat, and gloves.
The Texas primaries are being held today, and the polls were supposed to closed at 7 PM local time, but some are still open amid chaos after confusion among voters and complaints of being turned away.
Per KWTX:
The man was placed in the back of a Dallas police cruiser and later taken away. It was not immediately known whether the incident was connected to the Paxton event.
Paxton, who is running for U.S. Senate, is holding his primary night watch party at a Marriott hotel. Attendees were starting to arrive when the man was detained.
The Dallas Police Department and the Paxton campaign did not immediately comment.
Alex Muse, one of the attendees, said a man wearing a camouflage hat, sunglasses and mask covering his mouth and nose entered the hotel and was immediately instructed to exit the property.
“I think it alarmed everyone that he was all in camo, had a rucksack on, face covering,” Muse said.
The man reportedly alarmed Paxton’s staff at the event after entering under what appeared to be false pretenses.
More from the New York Times:
A member of Mr. Paxton’s campaign said that he had seen the man enter the hotel and asked to use the restroom. The staff member said he had spoken with the man briefly.
The staff member, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss the unfolding police investigation, said the man told him he was an Uber driver, but the staff member doubted that story, observing that the car he was driving appeared to have no plates.
The police officers searching the car, appeared to also take a license plate from inside the vehicle. They declined to say what the man was being detained for.
Doors were set to open for the event at 6 p.m., and many members of Mr. Paxton’s staff had already gathered inside the hotel along with reporters. Polls close across most of Texas at 7 p.m.
