'Not ready': Carrick confirms £56.7m Man Utd star will not play vs Newcastle
Manchester United interim manager Michael Carrick has provided an update on Lisandro Martinez ahead of the Premier League clash against Newcastle United on Wednesday night.
The Red Devils are set to make the daunting trip to the iconic St James’ Park, aiming to extend their impressive unbeaten run under Carrick.
Speaking during his pre-match press conference earlier today, Carrick revealed that both Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw remain doubts for the high-stakes encounter.
The former United midfielder has now confirmed a further setback, with Martinez ruled out of the clash.
He said (via ManUtd.com): “He won’t be with us. He’s not quite ready for that.
The £56.7 million signing missed the trip to Everton after sustaining a calf issue. His injury is considered a minor problem and he could make a comeback when Aston Villa travel to Manchester on March 15.
Carrick also confirmed that Mason Mount will miss the Newcastle fixture as he continues his recovery from a knock.
Carrick added: “We have got one or two we are trying to work to get them back, Mason as well, he is getting a bit closer, so unfortunately it is part of the game.”
Patrick Dorgu and Matthijs de Ligt are also sidelined due to their respective injuries.
United will be desperately hoping Maguire and Shaw can recover in time.
Shaw has been a model of consistency, starting every league game this season and playing a pivotal role down the left flank.
Should he fail to recover, either Diogo Dalot or Noussair Mazraoui may be tasked with filling the void at left-back.
There is also the possibility of Tyrell Malacia being recalled if additional cover is required. With De Ligt and Martinez unavailable, Maguire has increasingly assumed the mantle of defensive leader.
His presence is key to helping Leny Yoro and Ayden Heaven make better decisions on the pitch.
