Johan Rojas to appeal failed PED test
Phillies outfielder Johan Rojas has failed a test for performance enhancing drugs, per Jon Heyman of the New York Post. He is appealing the positive result. If his appeal is not successful, he will be suspended for the first 80 games of the regular season and will not be postseason eligible. Rojas, 24, was not in the Phillies lineup on Tuesday against the Tampa Bay Rays in Port Charlotte.
He was set to join Team Dominican Republic for the World Baseball Classic this week, but was suddenly taken off the roster.
Per the Joint Drug Agreement between the league and players association, all reporting players are subject to “mandatory unannounced urine specimen collection at a randomly selected date and time during spring training.” Players are also subject to one mandatory test during the offseason and regular season. Players can also be selected for multiple random tests in both the regular season and offseason.
Rojas is the third 2025 Phillie in the last calendar year to test positive for PEDs. José Alvarado received an 80-game suspension on May 18 for testing positive for exogenous testosterone. Max Kepler, a free agent who spent all of last year with the Phillies, was suspended on January 9 for testing positive for epitrenbolone.
A potential Rojas suspension could hit the club’s already thin outfield depth chart. Brandon Marsh, Justin Crawford and Adolis García are expected to be the starting outfielders on Opening Day. Otto Kemp could platoon with Marsh in left field.
